Remembering Diane Loomer, CBC BC
'With the passing of Diane Loomer, we have lost one of Canada’s most successful and inspirational choral conductors and composers. Diane has been a sensitive and generous mentor to so many young choral conductors and musicians. Her warmth and love was obvious to any of us who had the good fortune to meet her and it is one of the characteristics that made her such a successful conductor.
What Ms. Loomer had to say about the Yellowknife Choral Society:
"What is more exciting and heart warming than seeing people come together in song? It has been such a pleasure for me to know the conductors and singers of the Yellowknife Choral Society and enjoy the privilege of working with them. They have all the right ingredients to make their community choir into a solid organization: exciting, optimistic, strong leadership; active people with a wonderful sense of community and harmony; and a nurturing, positive environment that encourages cultural and artistic dreams. I am very proud to be an honorary patron of this group. The Yellowknife Choral Society is a remarkable community of singing people and I look forward to meeting them again soon. I wish them much success in their bright future."
Yellowknife Choral Society Workshop Lead by Diane Loomer
In October 2005, with funding from the NWT Arts Council, the Yellowknife Choral Society (YCS) invited Ms Diane Loomer, C.M., Artistic Director of Chor Lioni Men’s choir of Vancouver to conduct a developmental workshop in Yellowknife on October 28th to 30th, 2005. Chor Lioni accompanist Mr. Ken Cormier joined Ms Loomer. The primary goal of the workshop was to improve the skills and abilities of the singers and musical directors, leading up to the YCS’s Remembrance Day concert. It was intended to draw on Ms Loomer’s talents and experience for the betterment of the choir and the enjoyment of the choral society’s patrons. Ms Loomer also lead a workshop for the choir of Ecole Sir John Franklin High School, directed by music teacher Bill Gilday.
After the workshops with the choir, approximately 120 members of the public attended an open rehearsal at the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly. Diane Loomer, C.M. gave an entertaining introduction to choral music
